A Night at the Fair
So Friday nite, a couple of guys from work and I decided to head to the San Diego County Fair (formly known as the Del Mar Fair). For my Canadian friends, the San Diego Fair is kinda like the CNE but like 1/4 the size and even with less things to do. We were supposed to be going with a couple of girls but they all cancelled at the last minute (*sigh* life in the game industry).
Okay. So, I would be lying if I said we had a great time. Every year we go to this fair and every year we get equally disappointed. There really isn't much to do here but eat and do the rides. And there's way too much ppl and everything is overpriced. We did try to humour ourselves by checking out the shops but there was nothing there but crap.
Nevertheless, it was fun to just hang out with each other. We checked out livestock but we missed the racing pigs. We did go on a couple of rides (though two 30 sec rides for 5 bucks isn't hardly value) and had some good carnival foods before we left.
Later that nite, we rented Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust:
--Movie Review: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: 3.0 Denstars (out of 5)
About a half human, half vampire, vampire hunter and his battle to rescue this girl from a "super" vampire. Okay, this is the movie of that cult favorite anime series of the same name, in which I have never watched. All I can say, it was much better than Blade 2, but not by much. Though had some cool art and style, I was just really bored with the movie. The story was kinda predictable, the main character was just so uninteresting and it just dragged on and on. Recommended only to those who watched the series (and liked it).
The Goddess of Flower
So, Saturday nite, I got to attend an Pilipino-American play called Goddess of Flower on the SDAFF (they paid for it). We almost never got in because someone forgot to get reservations for the show which happens to be the LAST show ever (and last show in that theatre too) and was near being sold out. But we got in.
--Play Review: Goddess of Flowers: 3.5 Denstars (out of 5)
About a young UCLA undergrad Flora and her battle against her disfunctional family and a mysterious "flying man" that haunts her dreams. This play was a serious piece of drama with intense emotional scenes and very little in terms of comedic relief. The mom and sister in the play were very good, but I thought the main character of Flora was just a little too serious, to a point she had almost no life in her performance. Interesting set design with a lot of set moving on this small stage in which was accompany by this "flying man" flying around.
Later that nite, we met these really cool (and cute) girls during the afterparty of the play. We all later went for pizza at this great italian restaurant across the street. We were the only ppl there at the restaurant because they were ready to close but let us stay and eat. We stayed up to 12 midnite, laughing and talking, even though the place closes around 11pm. I was sure they hated us all that nite.
Nevertheless we had a good time. Why am I meeting all these cool ppl NOW!!?

My Car Now Smells Like Hello Kitty
On the weekend, I got to hang out with my friend Homunculus in Torrance. I haven't seen her for awhile, especially after she graduated from UCSD and what better time than then! Plus she had a whole bunch of books I needed to get back and she also had my birthday present (my birthday was in march).
One of the gifts I got was something I really needed. It was an air freshener for my car. But not just any ol' air fresheners, but one of those "Asian" ones, the ones that all those import racer have that make their car smell like Hello Kitty. I was pushing those Asian stereotypes once more.
Anyways, this air freshener was STRONG. I mean, really strong. We installed into my car before we went out for some food. Came back my whole car smelled. It was so strong, we had to turn it down a whole lot because it was giving my friend a headache (and she bought it for me too!).
Anyways, that air freshener kept going and going for the week. The reason I needed an airfreshener was that my air conditioner in my car always put out this initial mildrewy scent whenever my car was started. Its really not bad till you get into my car after its been in the hot sun for awhile. But with the new air freshener, it made the mildrewy scent even more noticable (without masking it) even on not hot dayz. Because the air freshener was so strong, it pronounce the other scent more, to a point that you can almost smell it mixing and that was even worst!
I have recently got my car hand cleaned (inside and out) and that helped removed the mildrewy scent from my car. I also removed the scented core from the air freshener (but not the cool and fashionable case that is now attached to my dash, for the whole whole to see my "rice boy-ness") but my car still smells from it. Its really that strong!
Dont worry Maya. I plan to still use your gift cause I do like the scent. Just going to put it in for like once a week for now on ;)
MTV Movie House
Did anyone catch MTV Movie House on MTV? The one with the Minority Report review?
Anyways, they had an interview with Sean Williams Scott (Siftler from American Pie) in which they did the interview at Suspect Video in Toronto (he's in town filming Bulletproof Monk with Chow Yun Fat)!!! I was completely blown away by that cause here's one of my favorite video stores on my TV! Suspect Video is a great place to find really wierd and obscured movies from around the world! Check it out when you have the chance (as well as that great comic store next store the Beguiling!).
I miss Toronto now. :(

Pilipino Cultural Awareness Festival
Saturday morning, I woke up really early to drive down to Chula Vista (about a hour drive south for me) to attend this Pilipino Cultural Awareness Festival at Southwest College. I was there to help set up and run our little SDAFF table there.
It was an OK festival with okay turn out. There were a few other tables around promoting or selling other things. There was some great entertainment (with some very talented ppl) too. The only problem with this festival was the food. There was only ONE table serving food, tucked into some obscured corner and the food didn't look that great.
A lot of ppl did check out our table there and we got a few interested names added to our mailing list. Our table was kinda obscured, shared with the Go Army! ppl. So, Gloria (the other volunteer working with me) got us to move our table to a more visible and location, sharing it with two Chiropractors friends of her. It was a better location, but for some reason, I dont think we got as many interested ppl as when we were back at the other place.
Since we were sitting next to chiropractors, I decided to take advantage and ask them for free advice on my back. Turns out, my back is REALLY F*CKED UP! Now, I know I hunch a lot which I thought would be the majority of the problem. But I also have a very "S" shaped back, and my right side is heavier than my left, by a lot! Yikes! It also doesn't help that I have a very fat wallet that I sit on everyday. Though I never had any pains with my back, I think I will be planning to see one very soon.
Around 3 pm, we decided to pack up. It was dying down and we were hungary. We packed up and went to eat at a great Hawaiian restaurant in National City. Spam rolls, anyone?
After driving home (1 hour) and napping (2 hours), my roomate and I went to go see Minority Report:

About a "future" cop (Tom Cruise) and his battle to discovered who has framed him for the "future murder" of someone. This is basically a futuristic whodunit with those basic "you think he's bad but he's really good" moments. But I was really entertained by this movie. I really love the attention to detail of the future that Spielberg has created in this movie. And I also like the product placement used in this movie too. None of it felt really blatant (except for the Lexus car, because it doesn't make any sense when compared to the other mass transit system used in the movie) and made the future seem more pausable. I liked it.

Good Bye Mr. Meland RIP
Today, I found out a former coworker and friend has passed away. Chris Meland died a peaceful death in his home in San Diego.
Chris will always be known to me as that angry bitter ol' man, always with a coffee in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. Chris was a guy who always had time to talk and always made you smile and laugh, as well as make you think about the world around us.
There is definately no one else like you and you will be miss, Mr. Meland.

An Americana Sunday
So, on Sunday, I ended up showing around an British co worker of mine around SD. He's been here for awhile but has never had anyone show him the city. Of course, showing ppl around was my speciality.
We first hit downtown SD. Nothing much there, he wanted to do some shopping and check out the World Famous Hustler Store and Cafe, which there is now one in SD. I have never been there but my friend sez its really awesome, so we went in. Actually, my first impression of it was it was kinda tamed. Mostly t shirts with nothing pornographic at all. Wow! Was this what all the fuss was about? Then he took me upstairs. Oh yeah. This was where most of the adult section was. Pretty much a libary of DVD and video porn and sex toys lining up the wall. But it was very tasteful and clean place, with proper uniform clerks. I was also surprised at the number of couples that were there too. It was like a family store ;)
Next, I took him to Frys. Frys is a HUGE warehouse filled with nothing but electronic stuff. My friend was COMPLETELY blown away by the size of this place and number of stuff he can look, see and buy! He was even more surprised that he found some really rare DVDs that he's been searching for all this time! And at a great price too. He was very happy after we left.
Of course, this Americana Sunday would not be complete without dinner at the most Americana restaurant I can think of. Yup...Hooters. And we happen to sit next to where all the waitresses would climb up and throw their orders to the kitchen (via notes on a clip, strung on the rope). Today was a good day for him.

SDAFF Screening
On Saturday morning, I was over at an SDAFF staff member's home to do some of the screening of potential films that will be shown at this year's film fest. Basically, we sit and watch a whole bunch of films and rate each one to narrow down what will be picked for our festival.
I did the screening on Wednesday nite as well as this afternoon. Most of the stuff I screened were animated shorts, but there were a few Dramatic Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts and even some Experimental shorts. All the films ranged from really good to okay. There were nothing bad at all, all were very compelling to watch. Sure, they were some REALLY wierd ones, but they weren't bad, just wierd. But we did watch a lot in 5 hrs.
Do you know how much I love working with the SDAFF? I meet so many cool ppl! Today I met this comic book guy who worked with Alan Moore and Jim Lee!! But the cool thing was we not only talked about comics but a lot about games and movies! Why couldn't I meet these ppl sooner.

The Free Album limit is like 10MB, in which I have reached because I have like 200MB worth of photos. Though those photos are still up on the album, who knows for how long. I can upgrade to the premium for like $30 a year. Hmmm...maybe I should.

So Tired
I was up til 2am last nite helping another project out. I have been temporarily moved to this project for like a month to help them reach Alpha. Well...to my surprise, Alpha was TODAY, even though I only officially started on Monday, got my computer moved on Tuesday and didn't really do any real work until 4pm on Wednesday!!! Even when I am not technically in CRUNCH mode, they pull me onto a project that is!
Today, after a small amount of sleep, I had to meet with a movie producer who is interested in making a real movie on the game I am REALLY working on. It was a very interesting, 2 hr lunch. Very typical Hollywood kinda guy, promising the world and proclaiming that this movie will be the next Star Wars/Indiana Jones. Yeah right! But the casting was quite incredible. Can't tell you who's going to be in the movie, but believe or not, they are pretty big names and some have already signed to do it! I think the most surprising thing I found out at lunch was that one of the producers on the publishing side, is actually the brother to Frodo from Lord of the Rings (Eijah Woods). Wow! Talk about 6 degrees of separation.
Time to go to a free baseball game with tickets from my company. Its the San Diego Padres vs. the Seattle Mariners. And I am going with a couple of cool girls from SDAFF. Can't wait! Go Ichiro Go!!

Saturday: Taste of Carlsbad
This Saturday, I headed to this food fair in town. Basically, you pay like $15 per person (for charity) and you get to sample food for all the local restaurants from Carlsbad...and as many time as you want! There was some great "fancy" restaurant food (tiger shrimp in a light pastry, with a meat skew with duck), some awesome pieces of meat (ribs and wings), some great deserts and smoothie samples to wash it down. My favorite food there was from this Caribean restaurant. They gave everyone some Jambalaya, Jerk Chicken and a little Beef Patty. Though, the beef patty was kinda bland (not spicy AT ALL!!), the food was still so good. Must go back and eat at that restaurant.
And yah...we all got stuffed. After we couldn't eat anymore, and since this whole event was held at the Carlsbad Stores (a really high class outlet mall), we all ended up going shopping. No one really bought much, but I did purchase a desk set from my desk at home.
Later that day, (and after a food coma-induced nap), I went out to watch a movie. The movie we went to see was:
--Movie Review: Sum of All Fears: 2.0 Denstars (out of 5)
About young CIA analyst Jack Ryan and his battle to prevent a nuclear war between Russia and the US. Okay...I had A LOT of problems in this movie, but its not necessarily about the movie. One major one being the time line. This movie is about young Jack Ryan and it should have taken placed in the 80s during the height of the Cold War? Nope. It takes place NOW with Mr. Affleck using cell phones and Pocket PCs and the internet. This really bother me because it messes with the continuity of the other Jack Ryan movies with Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger). Of course, the excuse is, this is Hollywood, trying to establish a new film francise and they needed to be able to attract the young fans by setting it now. Okay...fine. But my other major problem in this movie is this (and its a big one). During the course of the movie, a MAJOR CATATROPHICAL event occurs, that is sooooo big that in kinda makes the events of the next Jack Ryan movies (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) SOOOOO MEANLESS and INSIGFIGANT!!! Not only that, an event like that changes EVERYTHING (look at the 9-11), to a point that the events of those next movies may not even exist AT ALL. Okay, you may think I am just over thinking this movie, but because I was, I just couldn't enjoy it, cuz it was too UNBELIEVABLE to me.

On Sunday, I got to attend an AWESOME Asian American play in San Monica, with some of my SDAFF crew. This play was called Achievers:
--Play Review: Achievers: 5.0 Denstars (out of 5)
About 5 post college kids living together and their battle to find their lives and a new place to stay. This is what acting and theatre is all about. Power performaces with incredible wide range of emotion watching this. Once moment you a laughing your ass off, another you are crying. Though a lot of the characters were based on Asian American stereotypes, a lot could have been related to anyone and there is an guaranteed that you see someone you know in there. This showing I saw was the last...it needs be brought and shown here in SD!! Its that good!!! I am inspired to see more theatre now, even thinking about possibly joining a theatre group...hmmm.

Power performaces with incredible wide range of emotion watching this. Once moment you a laughing your ass off, another you are crying. Though a lot of the characters were based on Asian American stereotypes, a lot could have been related to anyone and there is an guaranteed that you see someone you know in there. This showing I saw was the last...it needs be brought and shown here in SD!! Its that good!!! I am inspired to see more theatre now, even thinking about possibly joining a theatre group...hmmm.
Afterwards, I got to meet and hang out with cast for awhile. Everyone there was so cool. There were all happy to see the turn out and we were just blown away from their show. We took some pictures and made friends for life.
GOD! I am sooooo happy that started doing volunteer work cuz I have really met some incredible ppl (and some really cute girls ;).

Metropolis
Time: Friday night
Place: Price Centre Theatre at UCSD
What: Metropolis screening
Another volunteering gig to help promote the SDAFF. I got there early, found parking and set up all myself. Tonite's event was a screening of the anime, Metropolis. This was set up by both the SDAFF and some anime group at UCSD to raise money for the SDAFF.
First thing I noticed was that the whole anime club run by all women. Now, I am not saying the girls can't run anime clubs, but its jus the first time I have seen an all female anime club. Every anime club that I have ever been associated with has always been run by 30 year old men who can't get dates (No offence to the Men of AXE...Anime Extreme! Done by Geeks who Hate Geeks!). Anyways, it was a pleasant surprise and everyone in the club was extremely nice (one was very cute, btw!)
The screening went great. Great turn out and cool prizes givaway. Even Lee Ann (Channel 10 anchor lady and chair of SDAFF) showed up to address the crowd which added a sense of coolness to the event. I also got to meet this INCREDIBLY beautiful woman who works at the SDAFF. I spoke to her on the phone before but never seen her in person. OMG! All I can say, she was help hand out flyers and had no problem getting rid of them. Guys were literally begging for a flyer from her. I also got to watch the movie! And Lee Ann even gave me a hug too *sigh*

About a trio of dectectives and the battle to find the secrets of a mysterous female robot. This is the Anime version of the 1947 film of the same name, but a real drastic version. Story set in a retro future where man and machine work together, but not in harmony. This one of the most beautiful animes I have ever seen. The animation style was very old style American cartoon style, very similar to Popeye and Felix the Cat with every character drawn with extreme unbelievable characteristics. This is art, my friend. Story, was a little confusing though. That could be the fact I missed a good 5 minutes in the movie. Still recommended to be seen.
After the screening, I went to a small house party hosted by friends of the co volunteers I was with. I was fed with Chicken Adobe and played Mad Gabs all nite.
Mad Gabs in this game where you sound out odd sounds to make phrases and try to guess it. For example, you get the phrase: "Lawn Gopher Do". Now, start saying the phrase over and over again until you can recognize it as a familar phrase until you get the answer which is: "Long overdue"
RULE NO 1 WHEN PLAYING MAD GABS: DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME WITH PINOY WHO COULD DO THE ACCENT REALLY WELL. YOU WILL LOSE THE GAME!!!
